Boots on the Ground

Boots on the Ground

I’ve taken a bit of a hiatus from miniature painting. The break seems to coincide with my return to post-secondary studies. My free time is now spent on my more instantly-gratifying hobbies such as the new masterpiece from Coffee Stain Studios: Valheim.

However I have some minis that I didn’t post from a few months ago, so here they are.

These troopies are the UEF Infantry Platoon from Nuclear Shrimp Games.

I find the human sized figures are very important for giving a sense of scale to the big stompies.

This photo also features a 15mm robot from the amazing Khurasan Miniatures, but I forget it’s name. And of course the indomitable Hammer from Strato Mini Studio.

Up-armoured ground troops again from Nuclear Shrimp, these are the Tecton Order Knights.

Wraith Platoon. Less armoured, but perhaps more mobile & stealthy.

I’ve also snapped some photos of upcoming projects. These buildings are some of my favourite miniatures of all time. I had them printed @ Steel Warrior Studios. Unfortunately when I left them in a soapy bath for 5 days the resin broke apart in a terrible way. So I decided to base them together and add rubble to make a blown-out city block.

I also picked up a few larger buildings from Steel Warriors to add some verticality to the board. these ones aren’t printed in resin, and thus feature those pesky 3D-printed lines that plague the industry. They’re still pretty rad though.

And last, but certainly not least, here is the monorail from Brigade Models. This thing is just sweet beyond words. Before I ever saw this particular set I knew I had to have a mono-rail for the city. I hunted around and this is it baby.

And I can’t not think of this every time I see it.

Being somewhat dissatisfied with the rulesets available for 6mm scifi games, I wrote down my own. The game only works for my particular set of figures, and will be totally unusable for anyone else, but that’s okay. It has a deck building phase, and then afterwards players use those decks to fight out a tabletop wargame (without the use of dice).

I designed a card template for the units and tried my hand at a little digital art. Below you can see what I came up with; a somewhat adequate recreation of Strato’s Hammer. It’s way too much work to do for my whole collection, so in the end I’ll probably just end up using miniature photography, but it was a fun learning experience.

I’ll be making a more conscious effort to turn off steam and pick up the paintbrush over the next few months. Wish me luck!
